Gameplay[edit]
Amnesia is classified as an otome game; like most otome games, the player takes the role of a female character who can choose from a variety of male characters as her 'love interest'.
In Amnesia, the male characters that the female character can interact with are based on the symbolic suit symbols from a card deck with the following storylines (commonly known as 'routes') in the game: Heart, Spade, Clover, Diamond and Joker. Depending on which route is chosen, the player's relationship with each character is different. Each route is a parallel world where the heroine seeks to understand more about her selected male character.
The premise to the game involves the Heroine getting amnesia and losing all recollection of her current status and lifestyle. The game focuses on the actions and decisions the heroine has to make in order to retrieve her memories. Since getting amnesia, a spirit called Orion attaches himself to the heroine and gives her advice and his perspective of things, he also provides her with that 'inner voice'. Orion also serves as the main narrator to the story especially in the later story sequels. Orion needs the heroine to recover her memories otherwise he would not be able to depart and return to his own world.
Like many otome games, the events take place over a fixed time frame. However, unlike many games, each route in the game is a parallel world. Events that take place in one route may or may not have happened in another route. The pre-existing relationships the heroine had before amnesia are different in each route. The heroine has also gotten amnesia differently in each route. Playing this game is therefore different from playing other otome games because even key events in the storyline are not fixed.
Characters[edit]
Main characters[edit]
- Heroine (主人公Shujinkō)
- Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka (Japanese); Maggie Flecknoe (English)
- The heroine of the story who has lost her memories. In the game, Orion follows and supports her throughout each route to regain her memories. In the anime adaptation, she has no apparent name, and it is unclear as to which route she chooses or if she chooses one at all. She is 18 years old and a first-year university student studying psychology. She also works part-time at 'Meido no Hitsuji'.
- Shin (シン)
- Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (Japanese); Houston Hayes (English)
- Shin is 17 years old, and a high school student studying hard to get into university. Both Shin and Toma are childhood friends of heroine. His father accidentally killed a man who was under the influence of alcohol – he was bullied and avoided because of this during his childhood. Shin is trying to make a successful future for himself to stop people from comparing him with his father. He is the heroine's boyfriend in his route, but has a tendency of calling her an idiot and being rude towards her a lot. He enjoys playing card games and is a member of the track-and-field club. His favorite animals are dogs, and his love for melon soda is evident in the anime, game and several drama CDs. His symbolic route in the game is the 'Heart' route.
- Ikki (イッキ)
- Voiced by: Kishou Taniyama (Japanese); Blake Shepard (English)
- Ikki is 22 years old and a fourth year university student. He is best friends with Kent and has a 19-year-old younger sister (in the game). Ikki's hobbies include playing darts, billiards, and table tennis, as well as solving Kent's math puzzles. He is notably skilled at 'anything requiring him to use his hands'. His favorite animals are apparently hamsters. When he was a kid he wished on a shooting star for girls to like him and was granted with eyes that make him irresistible to any woman. However as time passed, he began to think of it as a curse. These eyes, however, do not affect the heroine, which is why he falls in love with her on his route. Ikki is always surrounded by girls and has a fan club that would do literally anything for him to be theirs – they bully the heroine often due her being close to him. He dates women for three months before they break up with him due to his fan club having the rule of sharing him and only allowing club members to date him for three months, though he is unaware of this. His symbolic route in the game is the 'Spade' route.

- Kent (ケントKento)
- Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Japanese); Tyler Galindo (English)
- Kent is 25 years old and a university graduate, as well as Ikki's best friend and came to know the heroine through being her tutor. His parents raised him with the belief that everything has some sort of logical conclusion, thus he believes anything can be solved using logic. On his route, Kent has a hard time showing his feelings for the heroine. His interests include devising math puzzles for Ikki and observing things. His symbolic route in the game is the 'Club' route.
- Toma (トーマ)
- Voiced by: Satoshi Hino (Japanese); Christopher Ayres (English)
- Toma is 19 years old and a second year university student. He is a childhood friend of both Heroine and Shin, and acts as an older brother figure to both of them. He loves the heroine but has a Yandere personality in a few routes. In addition to being in a number of school clubs, including soccer, broadcasting, archery, and the newspaper, Toma enjoys playing basketball, cycling, surfing the internet, playing video games, cooking and reading. His symbolic route in the game is the 'Diamond' route. Toma is revealed to love the heroine in two of the worlds (Shin's and his routes).
- Ukyō (ウキョウ)
- Voiced by: Kōki Miyata (Japanese); Patrick Poole (English)
- Ukyō is a 24-year-old photographer with a split personality who seems to know the heroine, but remains distant. He is in a lot of different clubs: triathlon, cheerleading, hula dance, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, kabaddi, dance, art, riding, debate and more. His symbolic route in the game is the 'Joker' route. It is revealed in this route that he wished to Orion's superior Nhil to let the heroine live, and thus he has to die on every route where she survives, as they can't live together on the same world.
Others[edit]
- Orion (オリオン)
- Voiced by: Hiromi Igarashi (Japanese); Shannon Emerick (English)
- A fairy which came from a completely different world. From the view of humans, he takes the appearance of a twelve-year-old young boy. He wears eccentric clothing. No one can see or hear him but the heroine.
- Sawa (サワ)
- Voiced by: Satomi Moriya (Japanese); Allison Sumrall (English)
- A female university student with a bright and sporty personality. She is the heroine's best friend. She speaks in a very lively way, but is someone one you can rely on. In Ikki's route, she does not work at the cafe, but she is still good friends with the heroine.
- Mine (ミネ)
- Voiced by: Kana Akutsu (Japanese); Molly Searcy (English)
- The heroine's kōhai at the place where she works part-time. She has a crush on Ikki in most of the routes, but she likes Waka in Kent's route.
- Rika (リカ)
- Voiced by: Yoshida Seiko (Japanese); Genevieve Simmons (English)
- A mysterious woman who dresses in old fashioned clothes. She is the head of the Ikki fan club. Rika is well mannered, but is terribly cold towards the heroine in most of the routes.
- Waka (ワカ)
- Voiced by: Takahashi Hidenori (Japanese); Jay Hickman (English)
- The manager at the place where the heroine works part-time. He is a wise businessman who holds a firm policy. It appears that he has a habit of being too devoted to the ideologies he believes in, and outwardly, he has a little bit of a blown-away behaviour. In the game Waka has a different personality depending on the player's route.
- Luka (ルカRuka)
- Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya
- Luka is a mysterious individual and plays an important role in Amnesia Crowd. Later it is revealed that he is older brother of Rika.

The events he describes are similar to how she remembers falling from the cliff, but not identical. Shin becomes aggressive, and the Heroine becomes afraid of him again, and tries to run away from him like she did before. But this time, Shin grabs her arm to save her, and apologizes for trying to rush their relationship. The heroine and Shin return to the others who are lighting fireworks, and sit down on the steps. The heroine is reminded of her memory of Shin confessing to killing a man while sitting on these same steps, but Shin's confession plays out differently: he tells her that his father killed a man. When they are alone, Ikki tells her that when he was younger, he wished on a falling star that girls would fall in love with him, and it came true: any girl who looks into his eyes falls for him instantly. But over time he has come to despise the superficial levels of affection he receives. He cares for the heroine because his supernatural charm does not work on her, and her affections for him are genuine. The following night, at a pier, the Heroine is confronted by the four girls that are in Ikki's fan club, and learns that they choose to only date him for three months each in order to share him. They threaten her because she broke a promise to deliver her 'daily report' about her activities with Ikki, which was their condition for allowing her to date him. The girls push the Heroine onto a small boat and push the boat out into the lake. Orion appears again, and they talk for a few minutes before realizing that the boat has begun leaking. Kent only messages her saying 'Good Night' or 'Good Morning.' Suddenly, the heroine gets a text from Kent telling her to stop by at his workplace later. Orion suddenly appears and the Heroine gets distracted, which catches Kent's attention. The heroine describes the circumstances to Kent, meanwhile drawing a poorly drawn picture of Orion. Kent tries conversing with Orion through the heroine. When he stops to think (with a sad look, according to the heroine), Orion disappears. Kent is disappointed, but walks the heroine home. Kent holds on to the heroine's hand, saying 'I'll see you tomorrow?' The heroine says yes, but as they cross the street, a man bumps into her and she lets go of his hand. After a few moments, she is suddenly walking across a street in broad daylight during a red light and her hand is grabbed by someone. 'What are you spacing out for?' a voice says. She turns around and sees Toma grabbing her hand.
8 | 'VIII' | February 25, 2013
After the heroine sees Toma, she passes out and is taken to the hospital. After a short stay, a doctor talks to her, and it appears nothing is wrong. Toma escorts the Heroine to her home, and gives her his phone – hers was broken according to Toma. The next morning, the Heroine wakes up upon hearing somebody leaving something in her mailbox. The heroine finds a mound of trash inside. Shortly afterward, Toma is shocked to find that there is nothing in the mailbox, apparently attempting to clean it out. Later, Toma and the Heroine go to a back alley, where the heroine discreetly asks if they are going out. Toma says that they are. They then head to her workplace to request a leave of absence, then they go to Toma's home. Later that night, the heroine leaves, alone. Later, Ukyo reveals himself and grabs her hand, telling her that 'she will die soon.' However, Toma comes in and shoves Ukyo away. Ukyo disappears immediately afterward, and Toma comforts the Heroine, offering to let her stay at his home for the night. The heroine agrees – Toma sleeps on the floor, with the heroine in the bed. The next morning, Toma is still sleeping, so the Heroine decides to comfort him by moving the blanket onto him. To her surprise he grabs her and holds her, muttering about how he couldn't sleep alone. Toma wakes up soon afterward, and they agree to take a break for some time and have some fun. They decide to go shopping. They take a break, and the Heroine decides to buy some drinks. However, one of Ikki's fangirls sneaks up behind her and cuts her hair. Two more of them approach her, and the three confront the heroine with angry expressions.
9 | 'IX' | March 4, 2013 | |
After the incident where the heroine encountered Ikki's fan, she was isolated in Toma's house for few days. Every time she woke up, she received coffee from him until Orion showed up and explained that he put sleeping pills in her coffee. As they tried to escape, they found her phone, which contained many odd texts, but before they can leave, Shin shows up. She went back to bed and pretended to be asleep. However, it is revealed by Shin while arguing with Toma that he was not her boyfriend. After Shin leaves, Toma revealed his true motive to keep her here. He kisses her forcefully, making her swallow the drug and black out. The next morning, she wakes up in a cage that he put her in case she tries escape from him. At night, Toma decides to let her out, and he explains that the reason he was doing it was to protect her from Ikki's fans. He puts her back in the cage after his professor calls him and tells him his data is incorrect in his report. When Toma leaves for the university, he forgets to lock the cage. The heroine and Orion decide to escape, as they have the opportunity to go to her home here where her diary is, so she can find out how she truly feels about Toma.
10 | 'X' | March 11, 2013 | |
The heroine finally arrives home, where she is able to open her diary by using her bobby pin, and she sees that she had written that she loved Toma, and that August 1 was the day she had planned to tell him. Ikki knew of this. After the heroine reads it, Toma rushes in with an angered face. At first, he starts talking about how it was dangerous to go outside and how she kept 'running away' from him. He moves in closer to her and notices her injuries. Toma tells her that since she did not know how his hurt heart felt, he would stop caring if she gets hurt too. Then he says, 'If I take all of you by force, you'll no longer see anything but me. Or will you break instead?' The heroine replies that she knows that he wouldn't do that. So, Toma asks, 'If I can't protect you, should I break you? I believe that I'll still love you, so..' Seeing the Heroine afraid, he apologizes but says that he doesn't plan to let her hand go. As he closes into her face, the diary that the Heroine was holding the whole time falls down to the floor where Toma notices it. He asks her what it was and the Heroine replies that it was her diary. After he reads her diary and understands what she had felt, he apologizes and tells her he loves her. Because she got injured in the last episode Toma takes her to the hospital, where Ikki and his fanclub apologize to her. Toma leaves and the next scene was at the hospital, where everything was dark. Ukyo comes and picks the heroine up while she is sleeping and drops her off the building. Then, the memories at the burning building with the watchtower is shown again. She then arrives back on August 1, where a lot of 'bad' things happened to her like almost getting hit by a train but Ukyo's warnings prevented her death. At the end of the episode Ukyo tells her that the world is trying to kill her and that they are lovers.
11 | 'XI' | March 18, 2013 | |
The story begins once again when Ukyo reveals the fact that they are lovers. He talks about the past, how they had met when the heroine was lost while on vacation at Ukyo's hometown, and how they had met once again at the University. They start walking home, and Orion tells the heroine to ask Ukyo about what he meant when he said, 'This world is trying to kill you.' He tells her that there are many dangers in this world and tells her never to go to the well at the old shrine nearby. Ukyo suddenly crouches in fear, hinting that he had almost died once falling in. He says that he will try to help her make it to August 25, but can't say why. The heroine wonders if he can see the future and he whispers softly, 'Because I experienced it.' At home, the heroine and Orion ponder over these strange words. It turns back to Ukyo and his split personalities waver over whether or not to continue protecting the heroine. The heroine goes to work the next day, where Waka is complaining about the water flooding the cafe and how he had to clean all of it up. The Heroine leaves and remarks that Waka looks very tired. They find Ukyo sleeping, which turns out to be the evil personality, and he grabs her, telling her that she's the one who should be dead, not him. Luckily, good Ukyo wakes up and lets go, reminding her that he is a danger to her and that she should always be on her guard. Orion realizes that Ukyo has a split personality. It goes to Ukyo, who is surrounded by two robbers. When the episode continues, the men are on the ground groaning and evil Ukyo is back with the words 'I can't die here now.' Ukyo calls the heroine to meet him at the shrine and she goes, only to find evil Ukyo, who tries dropping her into the well. However, the good Ukyo cuts himself and goes back to normal. He catches the Heroine and they end up panting besides the well. He tells her to stay away from him. However, Ukyo continues sending her messages to help her avoid danger. The heroine calls him, and Ukyo tells her that August 25 is when the world will try its very best to kill her. He commands her to not take a single step out of the house. Then, he tells her that once he hangs up, to never trust him again, and tells her that he will always love her. Then, he hangs up. The next day, it's raining outside and the Heroine gets a message that hints that Ukyo is going to die at the University. She runs outside, despite his warning from yesterday's phone call, and goes to the University. She finds Ukyo, and once again, it's the evil personality and he has a knife in his hand. She runs and hides in an auditorium, which soon catches fire from a strike of lightning. Ukyo then traps her in the auditorium and tells the Heroine, 'You can't escape now. Your life is almost over.' Coming closer, while laughing maniacally, he says, 'This time, I'll kill you with my own hands.'
12 | 'XII' | March 25, 2013 | |
Continuing from the episode from before, Ukyo, in his bad persona, is in pursuit of the heroine. He finds her hiding near chairs and tries to stab her, but he misses while the Heroine runs to the entrance of the building. Finding it locked, Ukyo catches up to her as he shows her that he had the keys. As he tells her that it was her destiny to die in the building, the window above the doors breaks, which makes Ukyo flip to his good side. When good Ukyo notices that he was carrying a knife, he asks the Heroine why she was here. The Heroine explains that it was because the text he sent her from the previous episode that hinted at his death. Hearing her reply, good Ukyo figures out that it was his bad persona that sent it to her. Then he begins to explain what had happen in this world the first time, when the Heroine was actually involved with the explosion in the university mentioned from Episode 10. Ukyo continues on saying that for twenty-five days, the Heroine was unconscious and then on August 25, she died. This event where she died in the fire was actually the first piece of memory the Heroine remembered after she got her amnesia. Since he couldn't accept her death, he traveled to other worlds because he was trying to find her in a world where she was alive which was his wish. Ukyo changes back to evil Ukyo when a lightning bolt strikes the door. The Heroine evades just in time as evil Ukyo says, 'But if you die, I get to live.' Evil Ukyo goes on saying that whenever he had found her alive in another world, he had never existed in that world to begin with. Then he explained that since the Heroine was an anomaly in the current world she was in since Ukyo was already there, she was being targeted by the world instead of him. The only reason why she was still alive right now was only because of good Ukyo's warnings, since he experienced all of those incidents from the previous worlds. Whenever Ukyo found the Heroine alive in a world, he would always die, which brought him to the conclusion that there wasn't any world where both of them were alive. This was why bad Ukyo was trying to kill her right now; to escape the eternal loop of death. The Heroine gets chased again and stops to another door where she finds it also locked as evil Ukyo tries to kill her once more but misses, but manages to catch her and began to strangle her. However, good Ukyo interrupts him. At that point, it was revealed by Ukyo that Ukyo's bad personality was created from all the pain and hellish experiences he faced. Good Ukyo tells him to shut up, but bad Ukyo also mentions that he had already killed her many times. Good Ukyo admits his murders while saying that it was unforgivable. He tells the Heroine to run away after bad Ukyo says that Neil doesn't have anymore power left to send him to another world, meaning that this was his last chance to kill her. As the Heroine runs up the stairs to the top of the clock tower, Orion explains that Neil was the creator of all fairies and how he gained power if he granted wishes to humans. Suddenly bad Ukyo comes and attempts to kill her, but good Ukyo kills himself so the Heroine can live. In his final moments, he confesses his love to her and said he was glad he met her. Then the clock strikes 12. Suddenly Ukyo's body begins to glow bright, as does the Heroine's. The Heroine somehow ends up in an unknown place, and Neil and Orion explain everything to her and why she kept on traveling to different worlds. When Orion repeats what Neil says (that he will return to her original world and return her memories), he reveals to her once her memories return, he won't be able to be at her side anymore and she won't remember him. As a white door appears, the Heroine and Orion depart and say their final goodbyes. During the credits all the different versions of the Heroine appear together with the guys in the different worlds the Heroine was with. At the end, she is seen with five cards appearing before her, and she smiles and finally returns to her original world. |

The anime adaptation of Amnesia was generally poorly received. Anime News Network's Rebecca Silverman gave the first half a C grade overall, commenting 'Parts of it are fascinating..while other parts are intensely annoying', and said the show 'basically feels like watching someone else play the game.'[7] Matthew Lee, writing for Twitch Film, opined that Amnesia's 'story offers nothing of any interest beyond the burning question of what the hell any of it means.'[8] Seb Reid of UK Anime Network rated it 4 out of 10 and called it 'A show that is best forgotten.'[9] Silverman gave the second half an overall grade of D, saying that 'Ultimately Amnesia ends as it began – fascinating in the same way a loose tooth is, but the payout when you finally get rid of it doesn't feel like enough.'[10]
